Malaysian Government Orders Torrent Sites Shutdown

Reports are coming in that the government in Malaysia has ordered the immediate suspension of many BitTorrent trackers hosted in the country. In a shock move, the government – citing the ‘Copyright Act 1987′ – has ordered hosts to suspend servers hosting BitTorrent sites, pending an investigation. Many sites are offline. Malicious Activities: Malaysia rank 2nd in South East Asia

The latest Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR), Volume XIII (ISTR XIII), released today by Symantec reveals that Malaysia is the country with the second highest number of malicious activities in Southeast Asia behind Thailand. The report covers the six-month period from July 1 through December 31, 2007.

Kuala Lumpur is top on the list of Asia Pacific/ Japan (APJ) cities with the highest number of bot-infected computers. This is a stark contrast to the previous ISTR (January 1 – June 30, 2007), where it came in seventh on the list.In addition, Malaysia has also been identified as the country in SEA with the highest bot-infected computers. Short for “robots”, bots are covertly installed on a computer to allow hackers to remotely control the machine for a wide variety of malicious purposes such as data leakage and information and identity theft.

WiFi SD memory card

 Eye-Fi Inc., a company dedicated to helping people navigate, nurture and share their digital memories, today unveiled the Eye-Fi Card – the world’s first wireless SD memory card for digital cameras. The Eye-Fi Card uses home Wi-Fi networks to create an effortless and convenient way for users to send photographs from digital cameras to PCs, Macs and online photo and social networking sites.

Eye-Fi uses home wireless networks to eliminate the time-consuming chore of dealing with cables, card readers or software plug-ins associated with uploading photos. Users simply turn on their digital camera and their pictures are wirelessly uploaded. The Eye-Fi Card works with existing and new SD-compatible digital cameras and stores photos like a conventional SD memory card.

No MIMOS isn’t going around promoting or selling aunties with IT knowledge. The Makcik in question here actually means MIMOS’ MAK-CIK PC (yes the name sounds ridiculous whichever way you see it), a device that they are currently developing that ought to help reduce the digital divide between the more tech savvy and affluent Malaysia and the more less tech savvy and rural Malaysia. Just think of it as Malaysia’s version of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) PC that Nicholas Negroponte conceived except it being made in Malaysia.

Earthquake 8.0 & tsunami warning been issued

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 has hit off the coast of southern Sumatera at around 7.10pm local time. The tremors have been felt across the Klang Valley area as well as some parts of Johor. Reports from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta have confirmed the quake, and a tsunami warning has been issued.

Nokia BL-5C battery advisory

Nokia today issued a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia-branded battery.

 

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries subject to the product advisory could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with Matsushita and will be cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate this situation.

CANBERRA: Pencetak komputer yang sering kelihatan di pejabat didapati mendatangkan bahaya yang sama seperti merokok, kata saintis Australia. Siasatan ke atas 62 pencetak laser mendedahkan bahawa 17 daripadanya – hampir 30 peratus – menyebarkan jumlah tinggi partikel dakwat ke udara dalam masa seminit. Profesor Lidia Morawska dari Universiti Teknologi Queensland yang mengetuai penyelidikan berkata: “Partikel paling halus ditakuti kerana ia boleh meresap masuk jauh ke dalam paru-paru yang boleh mengancam kesihatan. Partikel pencetak halus, seperti partikel asap rokok dan apabila berada di dalam paru-paru memberikan kesan kerosakan sama. Masalah kesihatan akibat menyedut partikel halus bergantung kepada kandungan partikel itu tetapi akibatnya daripada gangguan pernafasan kepada penyakit lebih serius seperti masalah kardiovaskular atau barah.”
